Both systems run successful shops. The real question is not which one is better, but who in your business looks after the technology.
First, so you can read this comparison in context: Jauca IT is a Shopify partner. If WooCommerce suits your project better, we will still tell you so.
The basic difference
Shopify is a rented platform. The provider handles servers, security and updates, and you pay a monthly subscription for it. WooCommerce is a free extension for WordPress that runs on your own hosting. You get full control, and with it full responsibility.
When Shopify is the better choice
- You want to sell, not manage technology.
- Nobody in the business looks after updates and security.
- The shop needs to launch quickly and run reliably.
- You expect to grow and do not want to rebuild for it.
When WooCommerce makes more sense
- You already have a WordPress website that works well.
- Your requirements are very specific, such as unusual pricing logic.
- You want full control over servers and data.
- Someone maintains the shop regularly, or you have a maintenance contract for it.
Costs, compared honestly
WooCommerce looks cheaper because the software is free. On top come hosting, paid extensions, regular updates and the time spent when something stops working after an update. With Shopify the costs are more visible: the subscription, transaction fees depending on the payment provider, and any apps.
Over three years the two are often closer than people expect. The difference usually lies in the maintenance effort, not the licence.
What matters in Switzerland
TWINT, payment by invoice, Swiss VAT and multiple languages can be handled with both systems, through apps or extensions and Swiss payment providers. Before deciding, check which payment methods your customers expect and what each provider charges for them.
Our assessment
For most SMEs without an IT department, Shopify is the calmer choice because security and updates do not depend on you. WooCommerce pays off if you already rely on WordPress or have requirements Shopify cannot cover cleanly.
