Getting recommended by AI: how your business shows up in ChatGPT & co.

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI instead of searching the classic way. Being named in those answers wins customers. The good news: the groundwork is concrete and doable – though no one can guarantee a mention.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: structuring content so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude name a business in their answers. Classic SEO aims for a position in the list of blue links. GEO aims to be part of the answer itself.

Why it matters now

AI search systems now answer a growing share of informational queries directly, without a click to a website. Users often act right on the answer: they buy the product named or contact the business recommended. A business that is not named is invisible to those people.

How do you get into ChatGPT's answers?

ChatGPT's live search relies on the Bing index. The single most overlooked step is therefore to submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, not only to Google. Without Bing indexing, a website does not appear in ChatGPT's sources at all.

Seven foundations for AI visibility

  • Submit to Bing: add your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools – a prerequisite for ChatGPT.
  • Front-load the answer: every page opens with a clear, direct answer to the core question, not an introduction.
  • Question-and-answer structure: headings as questions, concise answers below. This makes content easy to extract.
  • Facts over opinion: concrete numbers, prices and evidence. Phrases like "we believe" lower the chance of being cited.
  • Structured data: marking up your organisation, services and FAQ helps machines interpret content correctly.
  • Visible details: author, date and update date belong on every page – they are a trust signal.
  • Third-party mentions: references on credible external sites – directories, expert articles, local media – strengthen the authority AI systems assess.

How long does it take?

Realistically, three to six months of consistent work before AI answers shift. With clean execution, first measurable effects often appear after eight to ten weeks. Anyone promising a mention "from next week" is promising something no one controls – the models make the selection themselves.

What you can honestly expect

GEO does not replace SEO, it sits on top of it. Both rest on the same foundation: clear, honest, well-structured content. There is no guarantee of a spot in ChatGPT or of rank one on Google – not from us and not from anyone. What there is, is solid work that clearly raises the odds.
